This would be a great for the base of the hive for ventilation and for allowing mites to fall out.
Good thinking foundups. The current design for the Barcelona Warré has a trap door element that can be removed, the box spring joint would would make for an interesting adaption to that design. Below are a couple of images to illustrate where in the design. I will do some experiments along these lines.
